UK's Gurkha Decision: Good, But Not Enough
On surface, it sounds great. Retired British Gurkhas will now onward get full pension (a rise from £1,200 a year to £6,600 a year ) as their UK counterparts! It took Britain almost 200 years—since recruitment of Nepalis in British army began in 1815—to acknowledge equality. But a close look at this announcement shows this step may not be as significant. And the GAESO's initial reaction also does not look happy). Only soldiers who joined UK military after 1997 will be the beneficiaries. Don’t forget that now there are only about 3,500 serving the British Crown, as opposed to more than a hundred thousand during the hay days of the Empire. An estimated 25,000 retired British Gurkhas in Nepal will not benefit from this new concession.
