American Homeland for Bhutanese Refugees

fdebtUS Assistant Secretary of State for refugees Ellen Sauerbrey said her government is prepared to take in up to 60,000 refugees from Bhutan living in camps in the east of Nepal. It may take only 3-4 years to resettle them in the American homeland. This certainly is a good piece of news for the 100,000 plus refugees languishing in camps in eastern Nepal for more than 15 years. Canada and Australia are also interested in absorbing the refugees. A 60,000-strong American Bhutanese community, no doubt, can eventually exert extraordinary influence on the country's democratic process. However, it will soon be difficult to tell a Bhutanese refugee from a non-refugee since the lure of the American Dream among commmoners to mantris is remarkably intense.

Bhutan's king must be shocked. His grand design of eliminating any opposition by Nepali speaking population in his country seems to have failed. It may take another generation (15 to 20 years), but the future lobby in Washington (American Bhutanese) can force him to go the way of his neighbor the King Gyanendra. Well done America. This is a better way to bring democracy in Bhutan, although it will take some time.

The US decision to resettle more than 60,000 Bhutanese Refugees in US is a very noble and humanitarian move. The future of helpless refugees languishing in the pathetic condition in the refugee camps in Nepal shall be bright and promising. Thank to the great America! I salute the great Nation! The resettlement process should begin at the earliest.
